With Earth Day right around the corner (on April 22 this year!), we thought it would be fitting to share some of our favourite eco-friendly swaps. Although switching to an eco-friendlier and more sustainable lifestyle may seem daunting, it really only takes small changes that can be implemented over time to start making a difference.
1. REUSABLE WATER BOTTLES AND MUGS
Starting off with a simple swap! Instead of purchasing a plastic water bottle that gets thrown out right away, try using a reusable water bottle instead. Did you know that every year 3 million tons of plastic is thrown away by Canadians? Using a reusable water bottle can help to decrease this, and there are so many fun colours and prints that you can get! Similarly, try using a reusable mug for coffee, tea and other beverages. Take a reusable mug to work and when going out to buy drinks. Some coffee shops will even offer discounts if you bring a reusable mug, so it’s a win-win situation!
2. TOTE BAGS
Tote bags or other reusable bags are great to always have on hand. You never know when you might need an extra bag to throw some things into. We recommend having a reusable bag with you at all times to prevent having to purchase a plastic bag when shopping. If you do have to get a plastic bag, reuse it later for something else instead of throwing it away!
3. ERRANDS ON FOOT
We love this swap – walk instead of drive when doing errands. While it may not always be possible or convenient (hello Canadian winters!), walking to do errands reduces car use and allows for an easy way to get some exercise. Get those steps in!
Composting is the process of recycling plant and food waste into soil to help create nutrient rich soil that is beneficial to plants. It encourages the production of beneficial bacteria and fungi that can break down the plant and food waste. Composting can also reduce the need for chemical fertilizers and reduces your carbon footprint! It can be done both indoors and outside and is a great eco-friendly practise to add into your life.
5. SHOPPING LOCAL
Support local businesses! Whether that means going to your local farmers market, stopping by a locally owned restaurant or a little boutique, it all helps! Shopping local allows for you to invest in your community by creating jobs and helps to reduce carbon emissions put out by transporting goods that can be sourced locally.
6. BEESWAX WRAPS
Can you guess what this swap is for? Plastic wrap! Beeswax wraps are made from cotton cloth, beeswax and oil. They are often completely biodegradable and thus more eco-friendly. Beeswax wraps can be washed and reused many more times than single use plastic wrap, and it won’t end up in a landfill.
