SUSTAINABLE SOURCING AS A TOP PRIORITY
Much of the marine collagen on the market is sourced from farmed fish in Asia. We were not comfortable with this for Sproos. Wild and as local as possible were our top priorities when deciding on which fish to use. That’s why we source our marine collagen from sustainably fished, wild-caught cod, pollock and haddock from the North Atlantic Ocean (anywhere between north-east Canada and northern Europe).A TRUSTED MANUFACTURER & SUSTAINABILITY
We chose our collagen manufacturer very carefully. First of all, insisting that they were based in Canada, but also choosing them because they are the best in the business. They do one thing and one thing only: wild-caught marine collagen. They really are specialists in what they do. We have visited the facility on the eastern coast of Canada. We were very impressed with their knowledge, safety processes and professionalism. After the fish are harvested, their skins and scales arrive at our collagen manufacturer. The skins and scales are parts of the fish that would typically be discarded as waste contributing to the sustainability of our marine collagen.GENTLE PROCESSING & PURITY
At our manufacturer, the skins and scales are triple rinsed using purified water. Then the collagen is extracted using food grade malic acid. It's important to note that since we source smaller sized fish, the collagen is able to be gently extracted in this way. Typically with other marine collagen products, higher strength chemical acids are used to extract collagen from larger fish that have larger scales. The collagen is then dried and made into a fine powder. This powder has a molecular weight averaging 3000 Daltons which is an excellent, low molecular weight for collagen. Generally speaking, collagen that is under 5000 Daltons will have better bioavailability making it easier for the body to absorb and use. Collagen with higher molecular weights (over 5000 Daltons) will have poorer bioavailability.
All of our marine collagen are tested to meet the most stringent standards worldwide for heavy metals. That means you can feel good about the purity and safety of our sustainable, pure collagen.
NO FISHY TASTE!
One of the things we hear time and time again is that our collagen has very little flavour and doesn't have a fishy taste or smell. It mixes and dissolves easily (pro tip: add the collagen into your glass or mug FIRST before adding liquid). This means it's easy to incorporate into your daily lives. Whether it is in your coffee, tea, water or smoothie. It won't ruin the taste or consistency of your favourite beverage.EFFICACY
But does it work? As a relatively new and small company, we unfortunately don't have our own studies that we can site here. However, we do have many anecdotal reviews from customers that are noticing incredible benefits. You can see our reviews of Sproos Marine Collagen on our products page. And, for information relating to the effectiveness of collagen generally, please check out our blog post Does Collagen Actually Work? Six Top Studies That Say it Does.MARINE COLLAGEN VS. GRASS-FED COLLAGEN: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
We are often asked, "Which collagen should I choose, Grass Fed Bovine Collagen or your wild-caught Marine Collagen?" It depends first of all on your personal preference on ingesting a product that comes from fish or from cows.
People who follow a more plant-based lifestyle may be more comfortable using marine collagen. If your focus is skin, hair or nails, marine collagen is your best bet. Marine collagen is comprised mostly of type 1 collagen which is the type of collagen found in your skin, hair and nails. If your focus is joints, gut or whole-body wellness, grass-fed collagen would be your best bet. Marine collagen will support those areas, but grass-fed collagen (mostly comprised of type 3 collagen) will be most supportive of these areas.
For more information on the differences between marine and grass-fed collagen, read our blog post here. If you have further questions please check out our products page, our blog or send us an email at hello@sprooslife.com. We'll be more than happy to answer any further questions you might have.

I tried many different brands of collagen before I bought Sproos Marine Collagen. It is odorless, tasteless, and doesn’t spoil the flavor of tea or coffee. I absolutely love it, and take a heaped scoop every day. My skin and hair are healthy, and no one believes that I am 80 years old! I even get stopped in the street being complemented on how I look!
